As per the reviewer below, i will be able to confirm, it does indeed install maps. Why does Garmin says it doesn’t? Because they don’t want you loading your GPS with all of the free maps which are now available. How an organization can actually tell outright lies to it’s customers to guard its own interests is beyond me. And no, it’s not an Amazon error, additionally they say AT THE CD ITSELF that it’s going to not install maps!

This software is extremely basic and doesn’t offer loads of capability. I sync it with a Garmin Foretrex 101, which doesn’t have mapping capabilities. My plan was to map out cycling routes at the software and import them into the GPS. However, the trip and waypoint manager only has major roads (Interstates and a few US highways) available for navigating. It also only has major bodies of water. It’s nice software in case you just wish to keep track of where you’ve been and the way to get there again, but don’t plan on creating routes from scratch (unless, needless to say, you’ve predetermined the lat/long coordinates).

Garmin MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager… ($18)

I recently purchased a Garmin Quest2 which comes with all the software installed and no supplemental CD with MapSource, etc. I needed to install maps I obtained from New Zealand. Garmin says it won’t install maps, but it installed them very nicely. Further it has proven an excellent trip planning tool allowing me to set up routes and waypoints at home and upload them to the Quest2 before we leave for New Zealand. Much easier than trying to set them up on the Quest2 directly.

I bought this to use with my Garmin eMap. For the USA the detail level is the same as came preinstalled on the unit–major highways. I’ve used it in London, Cambridge, Paris, Tokyo and Munich. There isn’t really enough detail to find your way around any of these cities but it is useful for e.g. finding your way from suburb to suburb. The River Cam wasn’t very close to where the map had it so it helps to use one’s eyes. The maps are dated. We are developing a site in the high Andes near San Pedro de Atacama for the ALMA telescope–the map of that region did not show the Jama Road from Calama to Salta Argentina, a major international route (admittedly less than a decade old–but paved!).
